UK Trademark Registration - Names or Logos

Trademark registration is the way to secure exclusive rights to your brand name or logo.  The decision whether to register a UK trademark will partly depend on your overall business plans.  If you intend to market just within the UK, then a UK trademark is the option for you.

If you will be selling goods and services to a number of other countries internationally, for example via your e-commerce site, then a UK trademark application may be the right answer, if you extend it to other territories later, such as under the Madrid Protocol system.

Why Register?

Trademark registration should be the first step you take in your business.  It is possible to reserve a name for up to 5 years before using it under the UK trademark laws.  So, wherever possible, first secure the rights to your name, or have some solid searching carried out before spending resources on branding and marketing.  Contrary to popular belief, a domain or company registration does not necessarily mean you may use the name for your business purposes.  Registering a trademark will give you the security you need.
